How to find unused custom fields in Jira Cloud
Too many custom fields slow down screens and confuse users. Here is how to find the ones nobody uses, and how to check before you delete.
01 — In Jira itself
What Jira Cloud shows without an app
Go to Settings → Work items → Custom fields (older sites say Issues). The list shows each field and the screens and contexts it is used in. You can sort and check fields one by one.
The hard part is being sure. A field on no screen may still hold values on old work items. A field may belong to an app and be locked. Checking this by hand for hundreds of fields takes a long time.
02 — With an app
Find unused custom fields in a few minutes
- Install Admin Toolkit for Jira from the Atlassian Marketplace. A site admin approves the scopes. It is free for up to 10 users.
- Open Fields. You see which custom fields sit on no screen, which are cleanup candidates, and a plain verdict for each field.
- “Safe to delete” means three things: zero work items, on no screen, and not locked. If a field does not meet all three, the app does not call it safe.
- Export the audit report from Overview if you want to share the list before you act.
- Delete the fields you no longer need from Jira’s custom field settings.
03 — Go further
Clean up schemes and access too
- Scheme usage: workflow, issue type and notification schemes, unused ones first. Team-managed projects are left out, and the page says so.
- Actions preview: see what changes in each project, and which permission grants are gained or lost, before anything is applied.
- Access overview: people, app accounts, groups and admin groups, with access per Jira product.
- Seven of eight tabs are read-only. Every change is previewed, confirmed and recorded in History.
