How to see time in status in Jira Cloud
You want to know how long a work item sat in “In Progress” or “In Review”. Here is what Jira Cloud shows on its own, and how to get a full time-in-status report.
01 — In Jira itself
What Jira Cloud shows without an app
Jira keeps every status change in the work item history. You can use that, but you work out the times by hand.
- Open the work item.
- In Activity, choose History.
- Find each status change and its date and time.
- Subtract the times to get how long it stayed in each status. Repeat for every visit to that status.
This is fine for one work item. It does not scale to a whole project, and it counts nights and weekends unless you remove them yourself.
On company-managed boards, the Control chart report shows cycle time across board columns. It is board-based, not a per-status table you can export.
02 — With an app
Get a time-in-status report in a few minutes
- Install Berkly Time in Status for Jira from the Atlassian Marketplace. A site admin approves the scopes. It is free for up to 10 users.
- Open the project report. You get average and median time in every status, one row per work item. Open work is flagged “still in this status”.
- Past work is already there. The app reads the Jira changelog, so there is no waiting period.
- Open any work item and check its status history in Activity: every visit, how long it stayed, and rework loops.
- Need working hours only? Pick a business calendar with your time zone, working windows and holidays.
- Export to CSV or Excel, or save the report and share it.
03 — Go further
Cycle time, lead time and charts
- Lead time and cycle time out of the box, or your own start and stop points with pause statuses.
- 17 report types: durations, counts and dates across statuses, assignees, user groups, any field and calendar periods.
- Turn any report into a pie, bar, column, line, stacked or clustered chart.
- Dashboard gadget and a JQL field.
